September 30, (THEWILL) – Dikembe Mutombo, a former NBA star and humanitarian, has passed away from brain cancer at the age of 58, the NBA announced on Monday.
Mutombo, who entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015, was renowned for his defensive skills, ranking second in the NBA’s all-time blocks list.
NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, praised Mutombo’s impact both on and off the court. He noted Mutombo’s exceptional shot-blocking abilities and his dedication to helping others. Silver noted that Mutombo’s spirit lives on through those he inspired during his remarkable life.
Mutombo’s 18-season NBA career spanned several teams, including the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, and Houston Rockets. The 7-foot-2 centre earned eight All-Star selections and three All-NBA team honours. His defensive skills were recognised with four Defensive Player of the Year awards.
Beyond his sporting achievements, Mutombo was known for his charitable work. He served as an NBA Global Ambassador, using his platform to make a positive impact worldwide. His efforts in humanitarian causes were widely recognised and respected throughout the basketball community.
