May 14, (THEWILL)- Barcelona reclaimed second place in La Liga after claiming a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys. Xavi’s men registered their fifth consecutive home league win for the first time since October, solidifying their grip on the runner-up position.
The first half was a closely contested affair, with Real Sociedad’s Sheraldo Becker coming close on a couple of occasions. However, Barcelona grew into the game and took the lead late in the opening period through Lamine Yamal’s composed finish after a superb through-ball from Robert Lewandowski.
Despite Raphinha hitting the woodwork early in the second half, Barcelona doubled their advantage in stoppage time. Ferran Torres was brought down in the box, and Raphinha coolly converted the resulting penalty to seal all three points.
The win sees Barcelona move one point above third-placed Girona, while Real Sociedad remain seventh, one point behind Real Betis in the battle for European qualification spots.
