October 05, (THEWILL) – Barcelona currently owes money in deals for Miralem Pjanic, Frenkie de Jong, Sergino Dest, and Philippe Coutinho to the tune of €115 million in outstanding transfer payments.

Barca’s financial situation is dire, with the club overspending in recent years. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Antoine Griezmann have all recently departed the club as a result of this scenario, with their departures having a negative impact on the overall team performance.

Barcelona has had a poor start to the season, winning only three of their first seven La Liga games and suffering two 3-0 losses in the Champions League group stage.

With all that, Barca fans will be disappointed to learn that the team still owes a significant portion of the transfer costs for many of their underperforming players.

The biggest worry is the €39 million they still owe Juventus for Pjanic, whose signing – in exchange for Arthur Melo’s departure – has proven to be a disaster for all parties involved. Last season, the midfielder only made 19 La Liga games and has already been loaned out to Besiktas this season.

Barcelona also owes Ajax €32 million for De Jong, who joined the club in 2019 for an initial fee of €75 million. Dest, a fellow Ajax academy graduate, has also not had his transfer price paid in full. Barça must still pay €16 million for his services before the end of the 2023/24 season.

Coutinho will also be a headache for the club because €13 million of his eye-watering €160 million transfer fee is still owed to Liverpool, who have invested significantly more wisely in recent seasons.

When Barcelona’s general director Fran Reverter speaks to the media on Wednesday, more facts about the club’s finances are expected to be revealed.
