June 13, (THEWILL) – Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea’s Spanish defender, has expressed his desire to leave the club in favour of a move to Barcelona, with Marcos Alonso also hoping to join him at Camp Nou.
Azpilicueta’s contract at Chelsea is coming to an end in the next 12 months, and he has privately indicated his wish to depart for a fresh challenge. Todd Boehly had a gentleman’s arrangement with people in command at Stamford Bridge before his takeover that he would be permitted to go for a minor sum.
All talks were put on hold while Roman Abramovich handed over leadership of the club to Boehly, and now that he is in charge, Azpilicueta can speak with him again with the 32-year-old still interested in moving to Barcelona. He is waiting to learn if he will be permitted to go after reaching an agreement on personal matters a few weeks ago.
Boehly wants to give Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel a big influence in the transfer market, therefore he will let him make the final choice on Azpilicueta’s future and reach a decision on the future of left-back Marcos Alonso, who wants to join Barcelona as well.
The Blues will be willing to let Alonso return to Spain since they already have a substitute in Emerson, who had a good loan spell with Lyon last season.
