December 22, (THEWILL) – On Wednesday, Nottingham Forest defeated Blackburn at Ewood Park to advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
From the penalty spot, attacker Brennan Johnson gave the visitors the lead, but Scott Wharton provided the leveller Blackburn needed to equalise, just before halftime.
Later in the game, Jesse Lingard’s deflected free kick restored Forest’s lead before Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi’s netted a goal that made it three. Johnson added a second goal late to cap off an outstanding individual performance.
With the win, Forest is guaranteed a spot in Thursday night’s EFL Cup quarter-final draw as their squad overhauling during the summer begins to click together.
In their next match, Blackburn is up against Sunderland in the Championship on Monday, Boxing Day, while Forest are set to take on Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in the English Premier League the day after with a late 9pm kickoff time.
