October 22, (THEWILL) – Nottingham Forest defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the English Premier League at the City Ground thanks to a goal from Taiwo Awoniyi, as the runners-up from the previous campaign continued their poor form on the road.
In an even first half, Jurgen Klopp’s team struggled to create opportunities and fell behind when Awoniyi, a former Liverpool youth player, whose desire to play in the EPL came true via Forest, scored his third Premier League goal just after the break.
With Liverpool finding no joy away from home, Virgil van Dijk came the closest to tying the score in the dying minutes of the game with Jordan Henderson alert to keep his header out. The Reds are yet to seal a league victory on the road this season and are failing to live up to last season’s quality of football.
The outcome gave Forest a boost off the bottom of the table, but it also put Liverpool 11 points behind leaders Arsenal, worsening the Reds’ fading title ambitions.
Next Sunday, Forest will take on another massive challenge when they face Arsenal, while Liverpool will be on the road again in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League match against Ajax.
