August 07, (THEWILL) — Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm over what he described as a suspected breach of his confidential banking information after receiving a mysterious credit into one of his private bank accounts from an unknown source.
The former vice president said the transaction, which carried the narration “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” was neither solicited nor authorised by him or any member of his presidential campaign.
The development, according to Atiku, has heightened concerns about the safety of private financial information in Nigeria and raised troubling questions over how confidential banking details of a private citizen could have found their way into the hands of unknown individuals.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku disclosed that the transfer originated from a person completely unknown to him.
He stressed that the account involved is a strictly private account whose details are not available in the public domain, making the unexplained transaction even more disturbing.
“The transfer originated from a person totally unknown to His Excellency with the narration ‘Contribution Electioneering Campaign.’ Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised, or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” the statement said.

The former vice president said the incident raises fundamental concerns about the confidentiality of banking information, asking how unknown persons obtained details of an account that has never been made public.
According to him, if the private banking information of a former vice president and a leading presidential contender can allegedly be accessed by unknown persons, then the financial privacy of millions of Nigerians cannot be guaranteed.
Atiku further warned that if investigations establish that the confidential information was obtained through persons with privileged access to banking records, such conduct would amount to a grave abuse of power with potentially dangerous consequences.
He argued that exposing private banking information could leave account holders vulnerable to kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, cybercrime, fraud, and other criminal activities.
The ADC presidential candidate said the matter has been brought to the attention of the Nigerian public and security agencies, urging authorities to investigate both the source of the mysterious credit and the circumstances surrounding the alleged compromise of his banking information.
His campaign also linked the incident to what it described as a series of suspicious developments as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Without naming any individual or institution, the statement alleged that attempts were being made to distract and discredit the former vice president through what it characterised as “tired tactics” of character assassination.
It, however, maintained that Atiku remains focused on his presidential ambition and on presenting what it called credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

Atiku cautioned Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist efforts to divert attention from the issues affecting the country as preparations for the next general elections gather momentum.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the commercial bank where the account is domiciled nor the relevant security agencies had issued any official response to the allegations or confirmed the commencement of an investigation into the reported transaction.
