Aston Villa Suffer Fifth Straight Loss In 1-0 Defeat Against Southampton

November 06, (THEWILL) – Southampton’s early Adam Armstrong goal was enough to hand Aston Villa their fifth consecutive league defeat and heap pressure on manager Dean Smith.

Armstrong fired a stunning shot into the top corner just three minutes into the game, giving Villa a nightmare start from which they would never recover.

The early goal set the tone for a one-sided first half in which the Saints controlled, but despite creiating numerous chances, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side could not add to their lead.

Emi Martinez saved James Ward-Prowse’s goal-bound attempt with a strong one-handed stop for the visitors, while Stuart Armstrong and Oriol Romeu both missed the target from dangerous positiohlns.

Villa, who could have been reduced to ten men as early as the 24th minute when Anwar El Ghazi avoided a second yellow for a tackle on Tino Livramento, would have been content with a 1-0 deficit at halftime.

After matching Southampton’s formation in the second half, they came out in the second half likely a reborn side, playing with a newfound freedom and confidence, and making a serious attempt to draw level.

However, Southampton’s defence held firm to keep Ollie Watkins and company at bay, extending their unbeaten run to four games and moving up to 12th in the process.

However as things appear to be looking up for Southampton heading into the international break, it is not so much for Villa. And, with the switch in managers going on around the English Premier League, if the results do not improve soon, Smith may have to prepare for the worst.
