January 26, (THEWILL) – The group stage of the 2024 Asian Cup, running concurrently with the Africa Cup of Nations, has concluded with exciting matches and unexpected results. The 24 participating teams were divided into six groups, battling for supremacy and qualification to the knockout rounds.

As the dust thrown up by the group games settles, dominant teams have emerged while others faced disappointment. Qatar, the host nation and defending champions, asserted their dominance by winning Group A with a perfect record. Tajikistan joined them in the knockouts as runners-up, while China and Lebanon failed to advance.

Australia demonstrated their strength by topping Group B, joined by Uzbekistan. Despite brave performances, Syria and India could not progress. Iran continued their imperious form by storming Group C without dropping points, alongside United Arab Emirates and Palestine. Hong Kong exited winless.

An intense battle saw both Iraq and Japan qualify from Group D at the expense of valiant Indonesia and struggling Vietnam. Bahrain were the unlikely Group E winner thanks to two victories, followed by South Korea and Jordan. Kuwait propped up the standings. Saudi Arabia and Thailand booked round of 16 spots from Group F, but Oman and Kyrgyzstan missed out after mixed fortunes.

The group stage produced some thrilling football while ruthlessly eliminating eight teams. Qatar, Australia and Iran impressed by winning their groups, while Bahrain and Tajikistan surprised by progressing undefeated. With the knockout round lined up featuring more giant killings, nothing is guaranteed on the road to Asian Cup glory.
