September 16, (THEWILL) – After helping the Gunners to the top flight’s best performance in August, Mikel Arteta was named the English Premier League’s Manager of the Month.
Their bright start to the season saw Arsenal become the first team since the 2004/2005 to win their first five Premier League games. They also received praise for their engaging possession-based style of play.
Although Arteta’s team just missed qualifying for the Champions League last season, the additions of the Manchester City pair of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, has helped the Emirates club get off to a strong start this time around.
The Gunners fell 3-1 at Manchester United in their opening game of September, but they still hold a one-point advantage over Manchester City and Tottenham at the top. This helped Arteta win ahead of four other nominees, including his former boss Pep Guardiola and Graham Potter, who started Brighton and Hove Albion off well in August before departing for Chelsea.
The results for Arsenal were less favourable in the Player of the Month voting, with Jesus and captain Martin Odegaard losing out to the unstoppable Erling Haaland, who had nine goals in five outings in August.
