February 02, (THEWILL) – Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes his side can fight their way back into the English Premier League title race when leaders Liverpool visit the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The Gunners currently trail Jurgen Klopp’s team by 5 points, as they aim to win the league crown for the first time in 20 years.
Arsenal were top of the table when the teams drew 1-1 at Anfield in December. However, they went on to lose 3 consecutive matches against West Ham, Fulham and Liverpool in all competitions around the New Year period. The North London club have recovered since the winter break though, with wins against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.
“We play at home on Sunday, and I sense a real positive vibe and excitement around the place,” said Arteta, who hopes his squad can match their 1-0 victory against champions Manchester City at the Emirates in October. “We’ve conquered some big teams already this season, and this is another chance to overcome Liverpool and be in a much stronger position.”
The Gunners boss added: “We discuss momentum a lot; we’ve won the last 2 games and want a third consecutive triumph, especially on home turf with our fans behind us.
“The atmosphere is going to be unbelievable and we’ll need that backing. I encourage everyone to support us in every single moment, and if we do that, we have a strong possibility of winning this match.”
