May 27, (THEWILL)- Inter Milan’s record-breaking Serie A campaign ended with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Hellas Verona on Sunday. Despite the match being a dead rubber, both sides played with attacking intent, serving up an open contest at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
Marko Arnautovic gave Inter an early lead, but Verona quickly responded through Tijjani Noslin’s cool finish. The hosts then stunned the champions by taking the lead before half-time, as Tomas Suslov arrowed a strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. However, Arnautovic equalised in first-half stoppage time to make it 2-2. Â
The second period followed a similar pattern, with Inter dominating possession without being able to find a way past the inspired Simone Perilli in the Verona goal. The hosts offered little going forward but went agonisingly close to regaining the lead when Elayis Tavsan’s thunderbolt was tipped over by substitute keeper Raffaele Di Gennaro.
The game’s comical final flashpoint saw Davide Frattesi’s lob hit the crossbar after Ruben Vinagre had cleared off the line against his own woodwork during a frantic scramble. Alexis Sanchez thought he had won it late on for Inter, only for his goal to be correctly ruled out for offside.
With 93 points, this remains Inter’s highest Serie A points tally since 2006/2007 as they ended their victorious league campaign with an entertaining share of the spoils in Verona.
