SAN FRANCISCO, May 22, (THEWILL) – The officers of the Nigerian Army on Monday began a weeklong workshop on how to combat kidnapping, terrorism, armed banditry and cattle rustling in the country.
Speaking at the workshop with theme: “Enhancing the Capacity of Commanding Officers for Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency Operations,” the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai said the expectations from the men and officers of the Nigerian Army were very high and there is no allowance given for any act of mediocrity.
The COAS who was represented at the First Commanding Officers Workshop held at the 7 Division Headquarters in Maiduguri by the Army Director, Training and Admin, Brig. Gen. Hassan Usman said the workshop was aimed at raising the performance standards in the Nigerian Army.
He said: “I have no doubt in my mind that you will be diligent in your deliberations thereby giving impetus to the process of policy formulation and eventual Nigerian Army’s increased operational efficiency.”
He added that: “My conviction stems from your pedigree which espouses your appointment by merit to your exalted position.
“Therefore, my expectations from you are indeed very high. The Nigerian Army leadership hierarchy is not prepared to accept any act of mediocrity. There is no room for failure in any assigned tasks or roles.”
Buratai, who said the workshop, could not have come at a more auspicious time than now, noted that the fight against kidnapping, terrorism, armed banditry and cattle rustling as well as other forms of security challenges in our dear country are multi-dimensional and complex in nature.
He claimed that the response to the scourge of insecurity has been robust and holistic, and has yielded the much needed results as exemplified in the successes recorded in the fight against terrorism and the general improvement in the conduct of operations other than war.
