Army Repels Boko Haram’s Fresh Move Along Maiduguri -Damaturu Highway

SAN FRANCISCO, July 11, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Army Saturday repelled a daring move by Boko Haram gunmen to overrun the Maiduguri – Damaturu Highway in Borno State.

The insurgents had earlier laid a siege on the road linking Maiduguri, the Borno capital with Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, forcing motorists along the highway to beat a retreat.

Spokesman of the local vigilante group, Barrister Ibrahim Gunda, who disclosed this said: “I cannot tell you the casualty yet but there was attack on Gunda, a town on Maiduguri/Damaturu highway early today (Saturday).”

A commercial driver along the route, Abubakar Idris, however told THEWILL that the military asked motorists to return back to Maiduguri as they (military) moved to confront the gunmen who they said have taken over the road between Benisheik and Ngamdu .

He said many of his co-travellers had to wait at a distance as the soldiers moved in to repel the insurgents just as another local vigilante member, craving anonymity, said 10 persons were killed by the insurgents at Ngamdu village.

According to him, the soldiers were able to repel the terrorists, adding “they (soldiers) even waited there for some hours to prevent the insurgents from coming back to the highway to launch another attack.”
