September 08, (THEWILL) – Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, who is appearing for Greece in the EuroBasket competition, had to be replaced in his team’s game against Estonia on Wednesday after hurting his ankle.
The NBA winner came out firing and helped Greece to a 51-36 halftime lead on the way to a 90-69 rout. Although Antetokounmpo left the game because of the ankle, he also iced his right knee, which has been bothering him lately.
He has also experienced back soreness recently, but an MRI in August came back clean. The 27-year-old was kept out of Greece’s EuroBasket match against Great Britain on Monday due to knee discomfort, but head coach Dimitris Itoudis said it was “nothing major.”
Although he has a reputation for being physically strong, Antetokounmpo has missed 10 or more regular-season games in four straight seasons. In 2021–22, he missed 15 games.
Fortunately, Antetokounmpo’s ankle ailment does not seem to be significant, and his knee did not stop him from dominating Wednesday. After Greece won all five of its games in group play, he will have another chance to play on Sunday in the round of 16.
