SAN FRANCISCO, June 07, (THEWILL) – The spate of bombings in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, is yet to abate as another bomber rocked the popular cattle market in the town at about 3:35 pm on Saturday, killing no fewer than 10 persons, mostly traders.
The latest attack came only five days after a similar bomb attack on the Maiduguri abattoir, Tuesday, where about 20 persons were reportedly killed.
The cattle market, popularly known as Kasuwan-Shanu is located adjacent the abattoir.
Kasuwan-Shanu is one of the largest cattle and sheep markets in the Northeast and also serves as a major supplier of animals slaughtered in the Maiduguri abattoir which was attacked last Tuesday.
Local sources in Maiduguri said the Saturday bombing nearly went unnoticed because it was preceded by a thunderstorm which accompanied a heavy downpour,
According to a local source, who spoke to THEWILL, “the blast occurred at the time the rain was falling; our guys in the area informed us that they saw people fleeing the market area.”
Corroborating the account, a soldier, craving anonymity, said: “There was a bomb attack; it is just that people were really unaware of it due to the rainstorm. Initially, we too thought it was the sound of the thunderstorm.”
“One of my colleagues attached to the area later called to inform us that there was a bomb in Kasuwan-Shanu; but I could not get him to give details.”
