Andy Murray Drops From Miami Open With Groin Injury

BEVERLY HILLS, March 23, (THEWILL) – Scottish professional tennis player and former world number one Andy Murray has become the latest player to officially withdraw from this year’s Miami Open after suffering another injury setback on his left groin.

THEWILL recalls that the attractive Open in Florida, which used to be a favourite in the ATP circuit, will, for the first time, have none of the big three of Novak Djokovic, who withdrew to be with family, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, both of whom are nursing different injuries, this year. And, Murray, who was hoping to use the opportunity to improve will be missing too.

This latest in a string of withdrawals comes as the 33-year-old was scheduled to return to action after missing the recent event in Dubai following the birth of a fourth child with partner Kim Sears. But, it became known on Tuesday through the ATP that because of a left groin injury, Murray would not feature.

The Scot missed the Australian Open earlier this year after contracting the coronavirus and was therefore unable to travel to Melbourne due to their strict COVID-19 restrictions. And, even though Murray made it to the last Slams of 2020, the US Open and delayed French Open, he was knocked out in the second and first rounds respectively of both.

The severity of this latest setback was not immediately clear but what is certain is that it will, once more, raise the inevitable questions of if he ought to take time out to sort out his injury woes and what his plans are before the tour returns to grass. For the time being, there is no indication as to his clay court plans, either.

The injuries just will not let. From a pelvic problem that disrupted the end of his 2020 season to missing the Australian Open after testing positive for COVID-19 and then having to withdraw from Miami, the city where he admitted to feeling “comfortable”, due to a hurt groin.

The 33-year-old cannot seem to get a break at the moment. The truth is each withdrawal eats away at his fitness and the time it takes to get back in shape and that gnaws at the confidence. He requires competitions like the Miami Open to get into the form he will need to fulfill his genuine belief that he can realistically win the year’s Grand Slam at Wimbledon.

As the clay season opens, Murray must be questioning his luck because, though it is a more forgiving surface on the body, it has not been particularly great for his strength. Besides, he has only managed one match since June 2017 on clay.

Yet, the sooner he can get over the groin issue and get some good matches under his belt with some good wins, the better his chances. Only one win in the ATP Tour this year is not the type of form that can take him very far with the quality in the men’s game at the moment. He must get very busy very quickly for his own good.
