December 21, (THEWILL) – Nigerian athlete, Oluwatobiloba Amusan, has been voted Africa’s top female athlete for the year 2022. The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), presented Amusan with the most recent honour on Tuesday.
This year, Amusan has performed far better than her contemporaries. She won the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she set a record, and the World Championships in Oregon, where she set a new world record in the hurdles event with a time of 12.12 seconds.
She also won the Diamond League championship for the second consecutive year, underscoring her status as one of the finest in the world and now Africa’s top performer. Despite missing out on the international honour of being named the World female athlete of the year, which was won by American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Amusan will be happy of her unparalleled achievements during the review period.
Behind Amusan came Faith Kipyegon of Kenya and Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia, who are also world champions in the 1500 and 1000 metres, respectively.
Meanwhile, Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco won the title of the best male athlete on the continent. Bakkali, a world champion and Diamond League Final champion, went undefeated in all of his 2022 contests. After the Moroccan, the Kenyan team of Emmanuel Korir and Eluid Kipchoge came in second and third, respectively.
