September 25, (THEWILL) – Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan, the current holder of the women’s 100-metre hurdles world record, has expressed her belief in how quality training and grassroots development initiatives can help the nation produce more world-class athletes.

Speaking in Lagos at a banquet dubbed “Tobi Amusan’s Homecoming” organised in her honour by the entertainment company The Plug, she attributed the departure of great athletes from Nigeria to other nations to the benefits such countries provide for their athletes.

Amusan said: “Grassroots sports development is something we lack here and the reason we often lose our top athletes to other countries of the world. From my experience training in the United States, if we can have such development here, we can groom young talents and unearth more Tobi Amusans.”

She regarded the ratification of her world record by World Athletics as evidence of her drug-free athleticism and expressed immense gratitude to the government for the national honour conferred on her and her teammates. She noted how she knew Nigerians appreciated her with the sharp growth of her Twitter followers after her record-setting race.

Flutterwave, which was at the event, announced that it had reached multi-year deal with Amusan as she embodied their core values.
