November 28, (THEWILL) – Lionel Messi was the target of an odd threat from four-weight boxing world champion, Saul “Canelo” Alvaraz, after Argentina’s World Cup victory over Mexico.
The 35-year-old played a key role as Argentina defeated Mexico 2-0 in the Group C match, to leave Mexico on the edge of elimination with one game left in the tournament. Before putting up Enzo Fernandez for the second goal, he scored an outstanding opening goal.
Video of Messi accidently kicking and standing on a Mexico shirt on the floor was captured in the euphoric Argentina locker room after the game, and it did not sit well with Alvarez.
He took to Twitter to ask his 2.2million followers: “Did you see Messi cleaning the changing room with our jersey and flag???? He had better ask God that I don’t find him!! Just as I respect Argentina, you have to respect Mexico!!”
Former Argentina and Manchester City star, Sergio Aguero, defended Messi, who is the godfather of his son, Benjamin, and told Canelo that he had exaggerated the situation: “Mr Canelo, don’t look for excuses and problems. You probably don’t know about football and what happens in the changing room.
“The jerseys are always on the floor after a game because of the sweat. If you look closely, he makes the movement to remove his boot and accidentally hits it [the shirt].”
