May 19, (THEWILL) – With a 1-1 draw against Leicester City on Thursday, Chelsea did enough to cement their third-place finish in the English Premier League.

Marcos Alonso coolly cancelled out James Maddison’s excellent opener to make sure the points were shared at Stamford Bridge. Maddison had earlier scored from 20 yards late in the first half, but Alonso volleyed home for the draw.

However, the Blues had a couple of opportunities to find a winner, but they were not clinical in front of goal and squandered them. Thiago Silva, Romelu Lukaku and Christian Pulisic were guilty of not converting their chances to take full points from the visitors.

Despite failing to win after their FA Cup final defeat on Saturday, Chelsea’s big goal difference advantage over Tottenham ensures that a draw guarantees them a third-place finish irrespective of the result from Spurs final game versus Norwich.

As the club waits for a resolution to the protracted ownership situation involving the Todd Boehly-led group, Thomas Tuchel’s men will be grateful for having taken another step towards the end of a difficult season.
