Alia Frowns At Dilapidated Condition Of Commissioners’ Quarters, Orders Eviction Of Illegal Occupants

October 17, (THEWILL) – Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has frowned at the decayed nature of the residential quarters of Commissioners and other top government functionaries in the State.

He, therefore, directed the Commissioner for Works and Housing to submit a detailed report about the quarters for immediate action by the State Government.

The Governor also ordered all illegal occupants of the quarters to vacate the apartments immediately or face disciplinary actions.

He made his displeasure known on Monday, after an on-the-spot assessment of facilities at the quarters during which he briefed newsmen on what he saw on ground.

“I’m quite disappointed to see the level of encroachment onto the land, and a number of unknown faces occupying the houses. Some of the former Commissioners allotted part of the quarters to people. This is not right. Any Government official by virtue of his office, becomes a custodian of the Government property.

“Most of these houses are no longer habitable. They have been so highly vandalised, and we have the new Commissioners on board. So, where do we place them? Right at this moment, all those who are occupying the quarters, that are never expected to be there, must vacate the places,” the Governor said.

Governor Alia expressed surprise that former appointees of the immediate past administration are still occupying the quarters, while other structures within the premises were either vandalised or in dilapidated conditions, and some portions within the premises were converted into farmlands with overgrown grasses.

A statement signed by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Print Media, Donald Kumun, said the Governor has inspected the decayed infrastructures at the Ministries of Justice, Works and Housing, in the company of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Joseph Alkali, his Chief of Staff, Mr. Paul Ibiam, along with the Commissioners overseeing the Ministries, and other government appointees.
