Algeria Beats Nigeria Again In 2-1 Victory At Oran

September 28, (THEWILL) – In Tuesday’s late friendly, Terem Moffi scored for Nigeria, but it was insufficient as Algeria came from behind to win 2-1 at the Stade Olympique d’Oran.

It was the scheduled international friendly between Algeria and Nigeria, two teams that failed to make it to the World Cup, but chose the international break to rekindle their rivalry. Nigeria had much to prove against their hosts after playing to a 2-2 draw last Friday against a depleted Algerian team, especially since Algeria defeated them in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semifinals.

The Super Eagles had a strong start to the evening as they dominated play and possession allowing Moffi to break the deadlock in the ninth minute. But, a careless tackle by Frank Onyeka in the area, resulted in a penalty, which Riyad Mahrez converted to draw Algeria level heading into the break.

The North Africans took the lead in the 61st minute, after their Algerian defender, Youcef Atal, unleashed a pile drive more than 25 yards away from goal and left Francis Uzoho in no man’s land. To find a leveller, coach Jose Peseiro introduced Godwin Saviour, Taiwo Awoniyi, Cyriel Dessers, and Raphael Onyedika, but they did nothing to change the final score.
Nigeria has now lost all five of their encounters against Algeria. In addition, the Super Eagles lost both of their games in this international window. It is not the most encouraging record for Peseiro, who has lost three of his six games in charge.
