September 12, (THEWILL) – Spanish teenager, Carlos Alcaraz, overcame Casper Ruud in four sets, 6-4 2-6 7-6(1) 6-3, to win the US Open and take over as the top-ranked men’s tennis player in the world.
The 19-year-old accomplished the sensational double, after winning his first major title at Flushing Meadows, which saw him unseat Daniil Medvedev atop the ATP world rankings, establishing himself as a true force to reckon with on the men’s Tour.
On the other hand, Ruud’s journey to his second Grand Slam final, after losing to Rafael Nadal at the French Open earlier in the summer, was just as incredibly amazing, proving that he belongs at the top of the game with his number two ranking.
In their first Grand Slam final, and with everything at stake, both players made a number of mistakes and appeared understandably anxious. For the second time this season, Ruud had to admit that he had fallen just short, as he could not find a way back on the Alcaraz serve, after their pulsating three sets.
For Alcaraz, this was a pivotal match in his burgeoning career, as he clinched his first Grand Slam title on the biggest stage the sport has to offer inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
