September 10, (THEWILL) – Carlos Alcaraz will play Casper Ruud in a historic US Open final because men’s tennis will get a brand new Grand Slam champion when the New York, Arthur Ashe Stadium hosts the Open final on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Ruud overcame Karen Khachanov in four sets on Friday to earn a spot in his second final of the year. THEWILL recalls that in May, he lost to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final.
Ruud will be up against Alcaraz this time. In the prime-time event, 19-year-old Alcaraz defeated American prospect Frances Tiafoe in a five set thriller and gave himself the chance for a shot at a Grand Slam title.
But lifting a Grand Slam trophy is not the only honour at stake in the match on Sunday, as premium as the opportunity is. Just as important, the victor will take Daniil Medvedev’s place at the top of the ATP rankings, which he will lose because he was knocked out by Australian Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16.
Ruud and Alcaraz have both played some breathtaking tennis in New York, and the final on Sunday could see more of the same as the two rising talents compete to win a Grand Slam trophy.
