August 29, (THEWILL) – Ajax have announced the signing of Dutch striker, Wout Weghorst, from Burnley on a two-year contract. The 32-year-old joins the Amsterdam club after stints with several European teams, including Manchester United and Wolfsburg.
Weghorst, who has scored 12 goals in 39 appearances for the Netherlands national team, made a significant impact at Euro 2024 with a winning goal against Poland. He also gained attention for his late equaliser against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final.
Ajax Technical Director, Alex Kroes, praised Weghorst’s scoring ability and experience, expressing hope that the striker will help the team recover from a disappointing previous season. Weghorst, a childhood Ajax supporter, stated his determination to earn a place in the starting lineup.
The Dutch forward’s career has seen him play for FC Emmen, Heracles Almelo, and AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, as well as Wolfsburg, Burnley, Besiktas, Manchester United, and Hoffenheim abroad. Despite not scoring in 17 English Premier League appearances for Manchester United, Weghorst’s overall record has impressed Ajax.
Ajax are looking to improve their performance after a challenging 2023/2024 season, which saw them struggle in the Eredivisie and suffer losses to rivals Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven. While they started the current season with a win against Heerenveen, a subsequent loss to NAC Breda indicates ongoing challenges for the team.
