August 18, (THEWILL) – The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) expressed disappointment after a Tribunal decision cleared Nigerian hurdler, Tobi Amusan, of a potential anti-doping violation on Thursday.
Amusan had been provisionally suspended in April over three missed tests within 12 months, putting her World Championships eligibility in jeopardy. In a 2-1 vote, the Disciplinary Tribunal ruled that Amusan’s circumstances did not constitute an anti-doping rule violation.
The head of the AIU, Brett Clothier, made it clear that they were disappointed with the outcome of the disciplinary tribunal and will now take time to consider the written reasons behind the decision in full before deciding whether to appeal.
Details of the decision are confidential, pending potential appeals. Still, Amusan’s provisional suspension has been lifted, clearing her for this weekend’s World Championships in Budapest.
The ruling could ease tensions between the AIU and global track and field authorities. Some observers accused the organisation of unfairly targeting Amusan after her surprise 100m hurdles gold at last summer’s World Championships.
