September 07, (THEWILL) – The kickoff for the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier League (NPL) season has been postponed for a second time, according to an announcement by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi.

As THEWILL previously reported, the new season was originally scheduled to start on 26 August but was pushed back to 9 September. Now Owumi has said in a letter that the season will be delayed further. He explained that the NPFL board decided to postpone the kickoff in order to allow members to focus on the upcoming Annual General Meeting of the Nigeria Football Federation being held in Uyo.

The COO said the board yielded to requests from various stakeholders in making the decision. Owumi noted that preparations for the original 9 September start were complete, with the opening match between Shooting Stars and Plateau United planned for this weekend. However, the postponement has been communicated to clubs so they can cancel any travel plans.

Owumi stated that a new kickoff date will be announced in the coming days. Reigning champions Enyimba are gearing up to defend their title after an early exit from the CAF Champions League at the hands of Al Ahly Benghazi.

This is the second time the league start has been pushed back. The NPFL board previously moved the opening from 26 August to 9 September before this latest postponement. Hopefully, this will be the last so as to allow the domestic League to align properly with the international calendar for this season.
