African Games in Ghana Postponed Due To Rising Costs, Marketing Rights

February 23, (THEWILL) – The African Games, which were set to take place in Ghana this August, have been postponed until 2024 following an agreement between key stakeholders of the multi-sport event.

The decision to postpone comes amid an ongoing disagreement over marketing rights, which has caused delays in completing the necessary facilities for the games. As part of their preparations, Ghana had initially planned to construct a world-class stadium in Borteyman for the 13th edition of the Games, as announced by President Akufo-Addo in October 2020.

However, plans were later abandoned in June 2021, with organisers instead opting to refurbish the University of Ghana Stadium. Unfortunately, work on the venue is now behind schedule, and this, combined with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and high inflation, has resulted in the postponement of the event.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Accra Sports Stadium, Dr Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, the Chairman of the Organising Committee, confirmed that the games will still be known as “Accra 2023,” as initially planned.

When questioned about the specific dates for the rescheduled event, Dr Ofosu-Asare indicated that no fixed date has been set yet, but more information will be made available in the near future.
