January 31, (THEWILL) – The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) received a vote of confidence from its Executive Board during the yearly general congress held in Abuja over the weekend.
The congress also adopted the newly amended Constitution of the AFN, which was based on the recommendation of World Athletics. Habu Gumel, the president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) was among the personalities at the congress.
The AFN, led by its president, Tonobok Okowa, has had a remarkable 2021. The board also led Nigeria’s U-20 team to win an unprecedented gold medal at the Nairobi, Kenya championship, which was the best in the history of the competition. To top off the year, Tobi Amusan became the first Nigerian in World Athletics’ Diamond era to win a Diamond League discipline.
Okowa expressed gratitude to the congress for their support during and after his election as the President of Africa Athletics Region 2 (West Africa). He promised that the board is eager to take athletics to the next level this year and informed the congress of the now cordial relationship between the AFN leadership and the former president of the Federation, Ibrahim Gusau.
