AFCON: Williams Heroics Help Bafana Bafana To Third Place Finish

February 11, (THEWILL) – South Africa claimed third place at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast, beating the Democratic Republic of Congo 6-5 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. This podium finish marks the nation’s best AFCON result since 2000.

In an uninspiring first half at the Stade Félix-Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan, both teams failed to produce any serious goalscoring opportunities. The second half saw an uptick in chances, with the Leopards looking the more dangerous side but their best opportunity fell to substitute Fiston Mayele, who volleyed wide at the death.

With no goals after extra time, penalties ensued. Heroic South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who saved four spot kicks in the quarter-finals, proved decisive again – denying Chancel Mbemba and Meschak Elia as Bafana Bafana held their nerve to clinch third.

The journey to this historic result will live long in the memory of South Africa, as they persevered after a shaky start, a 2-0 loss to Mali, to send Morocco home in the round of 16 and return home with a medal.

They will hope this positive momentum carries into their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, DRC can also reflect proudly on their AFCON efforts this year as they look ahead to the same target.
