AFCON: Uganda’s Hopes Dashed Despite Defeating Niger In Qualifiers

September 08, (THEWILL) – The Uganda national team beat Niger 2-0 on Thursday in their final Africa Cup of Nations group stage match, but it was not enough to see them through to the next round. Goals from Azizi Abdul and Joseph Ochaya in the first half gave Uganda a comfortable lead, however Algeria and Tanzania’s 0-0 draw meant the Cranes missed out on qualification.

Uganda started brightly in Marrakesh and took the lead on 17 minutes when Kayondo finished off a pass from Fahad Bayo. They doubled their advantage before half time as Milton Karisa set up Ochaya to make it 2-0. Uganda remained in control in the second period and made attacking changes, but struggled to extend their lead further.

With Tanzania holding Algeria to a goalless draw elsewhere, Uganda knew they needed to win by a bigger margin. Despite creating some late chances, they could not find the goals required and exited the competition at the group stage for the first time since 2019.

Head coach Miluten Sredojevic will be disappointed his side could not do enough to progress. The two wins over Niger, home and away, were not sufficient with Tanzania’s surprise draw with Algeria ending Uganda’s hopes. The Cranes showed they have talent, but a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal cost them.

The squad will now look ahead to qualification for the nest Africa Cup of Nations as they seek to rebuild. But missing out on a place at next year’s tournament will be seen as a missed opportunity for a promising Uganda team.
