51m Nigerians Enrol For NIN As SIM Registration Hits 189m

BEVERLY HILLS, April 1, (THEWILL) – The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, on Thursday disclosed that as of Wednesday, 51 million Nigerians had obtained their National Identity Numbers (NIN).

Pantami spoke at the weekly State House Press Briefing at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Minister also said 189 million Subscriber Identification Modules were registered in the country out of which 150 million registrations had been completed.

The others, he said, had issues of improper registration.

Pantami said it was a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment for any Nigerian to transact business like open a bank account, pay taxes among others without having the NIN.

He said Nigerians without NIN risked 14 years imprisonment as stipulated by the Constitution.
