FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has staked his ministerial position on President Bola Tinubu’s performance in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State at the 2027 presidential election, declaring that he will resign if the President loses either of the two territories.

Wike fixed January 17, 2027, as the date he would announce his resignation, one day after the presidential election, saying his inability to deliver the FCT and Rivers State for Tinubu would mean he had failed in his political responsibility.

The former Rivers State governor said he was mobilising a multi-party coalition in the FCT to secure victory for Tinubu and selected legislative candidates, including former Senate Leader Philip Aduda and two former Area Council chairmen seeking seats in the House of Representatives.

Wike spoke while receiving members of the Apo Mechanic Village Association, who appealed to the FCT Administration over their proposed relocation, assuring them that the government would engage relevant stakeholders to find a workable solution and minimise disruption to their businesses and livelihoods.
September 30, (THEWILL) – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to resign from the Federal Executive Council if President Bola Tinubu loses the FCT or Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the declaration while receiving members of the Association of Apo Mechanic Village, who visited him in Abuja to seek the intervention of the FCT Administration over the proposed relocation of their workshops.
The minister said he was confident that Tinubu would win both territories but insisted that he was prepared to stake his ministerial position on the outcome of the election.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here”, Wike declared.
He specifically set January 17, 2027, as the date for his resignation if Tinubu loses either the FCT or Rivers State.
“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT”, he stated.
The declaration adds a personal political dimension to Wike’s campaign to mobilise support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The former Rivers State governor has repeatedly expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while serving as a minister in the APC-led Federal Government.
Wike has also identified Rivers State and the FCT as key areas where he intends to mobilise political support for the President.
Addressing the Apo mechanics, Wike said the FCT was being organised around a multi-party political coalition to deliver Tinubu in the presidential election and support candidates across other elective positions.
He declared that Tinubu remained his choice for the presidency and endorsed former Senate Leader, Philip Aduda, for the Senate.
“For the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu! For the Senate, Philip Aduda is a man of the people, unlike those who only appear on television”, Wike said.
He also disclosed that the coalition was backing two House of Representatives candidates who had previously served as Area Council chairmen.
“The two House of Representatives candidates we are supporting are also here. They are former Area Council chairmen”, he added.
Wike said the political arrangement was intended to create a unified platform for mobilising voters across the FCT.
“In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results”, he noted.
The minister further described his political commitment to Tinubu’s re-election as an agreement that had been reaffirmed.
“If I cannot deliver FCT as Minister, then I am not qualified to hold this office. We have a firm agreement, and today is the final affirmation”, Wike said.

Apo Mechanics Seek Government Intervention
The political declaration came during a meeting with members of the Apo Mechanic Village Association, who had approached the minister over the proposed relocation of their workshops.
The mechanics are seeking government intervention to prevent the relocation from disrupting their businesses and livelihoods.
They expressed concerns that moving the cluster could have significant economic consequences for operators, workers, traders and other businesses dependent on the mechanic village.
Responding to their concerns, Wike assured the association that the FCT Administration would engage the relevant stakeholders to find a workable solution.
The minister did not announce an immediate cancellation of the relocation plan but indicated that the concerns of the affected operators would be considered as the government engages them on the issue.
Background To Wike’s 2027 Position
Wike’s position on the 2027 presidential election has become one of the notable political developments ahead of the poll.
Although he remains a member of the PDP, he has openly backed Tinubu, who is seeking another term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Wike was one of the five PDP governors who formed the G5 during the 2023 presidential election and opposed the party’s decision to field its presidential candidate without resolving its internal zoning and leadership disputes.
Following the 2023 election, President Tinubu appointed Wike as FCT Minister, placing him in charge of the administration of the nation’s capital.
Since assuming office, Wike has maintained that his political decisions are based on what he considers to be his interests and those of his political supporters.
His continued support for Tinubu has, however, generated tension within the PDP and criticism from some opposition figures, while some APC members have also questioned the role of a PDP member in the President’s re-election machinery.
Despite the political differences, Wike has continued to campaign for Tinubu and has repeatedly indicated that he would work to secure support for the President in Rivers and the FCT.
