February 01, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United advanced to the Carabao Cup final with a 3-1 aggregate win over Southampton.
Sean Longstaff starred for Newcastle with a brilliant brace, which helped the Magpies secure their place in the final. The first goal came inside the opening five minutes with Longstaff side-footing the ball past the goalkeeper into the bottom left corner of the net.
Longstaff doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 20th minute with a powerful shot into the corner of the goal. Southampton did manage to get a goal back on the half-hour mark, with a fantastic strike from Che Adams that found the bottom right corner of the net. The Saints tried to find a second goal in the second half but failed to capitalise on their opportunities.
In the 72nd minute, Adam Armstrong had a clear shot on goal but saw his effort saved by the Newcastle goalkeeper. Despite being reduced to 10 men after Bruno Guimaraes was sent off in the final 10 minutes, Newcastle held on to secure their place in the final.
Newcastle will continue their UEFA Champions League qualification quest at home against Bournemouth, while Southampton will continue their fight for survival away against Brentford on Saturday.
