August 22, (THEWILL) – Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Crystal Palace on Monday night, to maintain their perfect start to the new English Premier League season.
Captain Martin Odegaard scored the only goal of the game, converting a penalty in the 53rd minute after Palace goalkeeper, Johnstone, was adjudged to have brought down Eddie Nketiah.
The Gunners had to dig deep to cling on to all three points after defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was harshly sent off with over 20 minutes remaining, leaving Arsenal with 10 men.
It was a close encounter throughout, with both sides creating openings. Nketiah went close in the first half, hitting the post, while Odegaard forced a good save from Guaita with a curling strike. After Odegaard’s penalty, Arsenal dropped deeper as Palace pressed for an equaliser. There were some last-ditch blocks and tackles from the visitors before Tomiyasu saw red after picking up two quickfire yellow cards.
Manager Mikel Arteta reacted by shoring up his defence as 10-man Arsenal desperately held on amid late pressure. The victory means the Gunners join Manchester City and Brighton on six points at the top of the fledgling league table. Arsenal now turn their attention to Saturday’s home match against Fulham, where Tomiyasu will be suspended.
Overall it was a display of determination and resilience from Arsenal, gaining three vital points despite being a man down for the closing stages. Arteta will be delighted with his side’s desire and work rate as they passed this difficult test away from home. The next challenge for Palace is away at Brentford on Saturday.
