September 19, (THEWILL) – Italian club, Empoli, have announced the departure of manager, Paolo Zanetti, after just four matches of the new Serie A season.
The decision came following a crushing 7-0 defeat away to Roma on Tuesday night. In a statement, Empoli said they had “removed” Zanetti along with his two assistants, Nicola Beati and Fabio Trentin, from their coaching duties. Zanetti had joined the club in June 2022 and helped them avoid relegation last term, finishing 14th.
However, this season has started dreadfully for Empoli, who have now lost all 4 of their opening games without scoring a goal and conceding 12. The thrashing by Roma proved the final straw for the club’s hierarchy, who moved swiftly to remove the 40-year-old from his post.
Veteran manager, Aurelio Andreazzoli, who has already had 3 separate spells in charge of Empoli, was quickly installed as Zanetti’s successor. The 69-year-old has initially signed until the end of the current campaign with an option for another season.
The club will now be hoping the experience of Andreazzoli can help transform their fortunes after Zanetti became the first Serie A boss to lose his job this term.
