Youthful Liverpool Side Sends Reds To FA Cup Fourth Round With 4-1 Defeat Of Shrewsbury

January 09, (THEWILL) – Liverpool’s FA Cup campaign got off to a victorious start with a 4-1 victory over Shrewsbury at Anfield, despite some nerve-wracking moments for the hosts.

Shrewsbury Town took a surprising lead in the 27th minute, almost undoing Jurgen Klopp’s gamble of giving many young players their chance.

Daniel Udoh was on hand to tap the ball in from a few yards out to send the 5,600 travelling Shrewsbury supporters into raptures. Nathanael Ogbeta delivered a teasing cross from the left, and Daniel Udoh was there to tap the ball in from a few yards out to send the 5,600 travelling Shrewsbury supporters into raptures.

Their joy was short-lived, however, as the hosts equalised just two minutes later, with 17-year-old Kaide Gordon becoming Liverpool’s second youngest striker, stroking the ball past Marko Marosi from within the box.

Soon after, Shrewsbury believed they had taken the lead, but Ryan Bowman’s header was ruled out for offside in the build-up, bringing to naught another nervy moment for the Anfield faithfuls.

Just before halftime, Liverpool were given a penalty after David Davis handled the ball in the box. To give his team the lead, Fabinho tucked home the ensuing spot-kick past Marosi.

Substitute Roberto Firmino added a third in the 78th minute with a beautiful backheel finish, and Fabinho added a fourth in stoppage time to ensure Liverpool’s progression to the fourth round.
