September 11, (THEWILL) – China’s Yin Ruoning has claimed the world number-one ranking in women’s golf after finishing third at the LPGA Queen City Championship on Sunday.
The 20-year-old is only the second Chinese woman to reach the top spot after Feng Shanshan. Yin needed a top-four result to overtake American Lilia Vu for the number-one ranking. She carded a final round of 67 to finish on 14-under par, missing out on a playoff between Australia’s Minjee Lee and England’s Charley Hull. This is Yin’s fourth third-place finish in her last five events.
Earlier this year, Yin won her first major title at the Women’s PGA Championship, two months after collecting her maiden LPGA victory at the LA Open. Other players who have held the number one ranking in 2022 include New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, Americans Vu and Nelly Korda, and South Korea’s Ko Jin-young.
Vu won three titles this year, including majors at the Chevron Championship and Women’s British Open. Although she never shared the lead, Yin’s consistency was enough to propel her to the top ranking. She will be looking to cement her position in upcoming events.
Yin said after her round: “It’s just amazing. My mind is blank right now.” At only 20 years old, she has a bright future ahead on the LPGA Tour as the new world number one.
