May 31, (THEWILL) – Zouhair El Moutaraji was the hero as Wydad AC won their third CAF Champions League title in front of a home crowd at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, defeating holders Al Ahly 2-0.
El Moutaraji’s double propelled the Moroccan side to victory, despite the fact that they were the underdogs going into the match. Al Ahly were attempting to defend their title after defeating Kaizer Chiefs in the same stadium last July. They were aiming for a record-extending 11th title in the competition.
Despite having the majority of possession, the Egyptian serial champions were unable to respond to Wydad’s opener on the quarter-hour mark, and failed to score a goal of their own.
El Moutaraji’s second goal, just after halftime, effectively put the game out of Al Ahly’s hands, and defender Ramy Rabia’s late red card sealed their defeat on the road.
