January 30, (THEWILL) – A video recently went viral showing the concerning condition of former Nigerian tennis player Tanya Okpala. In response, Senator John Owan Enoh, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, stated he spoke with Okpala’s father and learned more about her struggles.
Okpala was once a top-ranked junior tennis champion for Nigeria and Africa. She competed at the highest levels internationally. The Nigerian Tennis Federation, previously paid for rehabilitation services when her difficulties first emerged. Sadly, Okpala relapsed shortly thereafter.
Enoh thanked Anambra Governor Charles Soludo for swiftly intervening to assist Okpala after the video spread online. Soludo’s actions represent a “highly commendable” example of leadership, Enoh notes.
Furthermore, the Honourable minister highlighted his ministry’s plans to activate “WAIFAR,” a 6-point strategy focused in part on player welfare services. The minister promised additional action to support both current and retired athletes like Okpala, who brought pride to Nigeria during their careers.
