March 18, (THEWILL)- In the Turkish Super Lig late on Sunday, chaos erupted on the pitch after Fenerbahce’s hard-fought 3-2 victory against Trabzonspor. Angry Trabzonspor fans stormed the field at Papara Park, violently attacking Fenerbahce players who were celebrating their triumph.
Nigerian right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel and Michy Batshuayi bravely tried to intervene as security personnel rushed to contain the ugly situation. The tensions initially flared in the 87th minute when objects were hurled onto the pitch after Batshuayi scored the late winner for the visiting side.
This incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with Turkish Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to denounce the violence, stating: “Above all, sport is gentlemanship. It is never acceptable for violence to take place on football pitches.”
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident in the 2023/2024 Turkish football season. In December, a suspension of Super Lig fixtures was mandated after referee Halil Umut Meler was struck by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca during a match. Such unacceptable behaviour tarnishes the image of the sport and raises concerns about fan conduct and field security.
The result leaves Fenerbahce firmly in second place, just two points behind leaders Galatasaray, while Trabzonspor languish 30 points behind in third position. As the title race intensifies, authorities must take decisive action to prevent a recurrence of such deplorable scenes and ensure the safety of players, officials and fans alike.
