Villarreal Appoint Setien To Replace Emery As Manager

October 25, (THEWILL) – Quique Setien, a former manager of Barcelona, has been named the manager of Villarreal after Unai Emery decided to depart for Aston Villa.

The 2021 Europa League-winning coach of Villarreal, was hired by the English Premier League side on Monday, to take Steven Gerrard’s place and the Yellow Submarine moved fast to appoint a replacement.

Setien’s agreement to a deal that would last until the end of the 2023/2024 season was made official on Tuesday by Villarreal’s statement. In two years at Real Betis, Setien established a reputation for favouring an appealing, possession-based style, but has not coached since his disastrous tenure at Camp Nou in the 2019/2020 season.

Setien’s final match for Barcelona was their historic 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich, in the quarterfinals of the Champions League in August 2020. The Blaugrana also finished fifth in La Liga that year, five points behind Real Madrid.

Setien will take charge of Villarreal’s Europa Conference League match against Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday. Villarreal is currently seventh in La Liga after winning five of their 11 games this season.
