September 21, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa’s debut in the UEFA Europa Conference League ended in disappointment as Legia Warsaw pulled off a deserved 3-2 victory in Poland on Thursday night.
Despite twice rallying from a goal down, sloppy defending ultimately cost Villa as Ernest Muci’s second-half winner sealed the win for the hosts. The match started in frantic fashion, with Legia taking the early lead through Pawel Wszolek before Villa equalised just minutes later courtesy of a Jhon Duran header. But the see-saw nature of the opening continued as Muci restored Legia’s advantage midway through the first half.
Villa showed resilience to level again before the break, Lucas Digne firing in a deflected volley. However, the visitors’ defensive frailties remained and Muci capitalised just after half-time, squeezing in his shot off the post. Unai Emery introduced reinforcements in an attempt to spark a comeback but clear-cut chances were scarce as Legia held firm.
The result means Villa’s campaign in Group E has gotten off to a disappointing beginning. While progression from the group stage remains very achievable, significant improvements will be required defensively if Villa are to mount a serious challenge for Conference League glory.
After a long absence, Thursday’s return to European football quickly turned into a night to forget in Warsaw for Aston Villa. They are away to Chelsea on Sunday in the English premier League while Warsaw are up against Gornik Zebrze on the same day.
