September 16, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa scraped an uninspiring 1-0 win against Southampton on Friday, in a match that gave evidence of the period of mourning that the United Kingdom was presently undergoing with the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

After the moment of silence was witnessed, it seemed to have dragged on into the game, as both teams struggled to find any sort of quality in the final third that was necessary if any of them were to actually score a goal to motivate themselves and give the fans something worth their tickets.

While Southampton struggled to penetrate the home team’s defence, Aston Villa gradually gained control of the contest and made a run for an early goal. Four minutes before halftime, Ramsey scored on the rebound of Watkins’ header to break the deadlock. During the buildup, the ball hit the crossbar three times.

The tempo may have picked up at some stages of the second half, but the fact that there was only one shot on target from each team after the break, summarised the game.

Aston Villa climbs one spot to 13th, still behind Southampton. Following the break for international play, Southampton will host Everton on October 1 and Gerrard’s team will play at Leeds the next day.
