June 12, (THEWILL) – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, extending his lead in the Formula One drivers’ standings for 2022.

Not for the first time, Sergio Perez finished second, giving Red Bull a one-two finish on the streets of Baku. The pairing finish extended to Mercedes, with Mercedes drivers George Russell third and Sir Lewis Hamilton fourth.

Although Mercedes can point to a somewhat successful race, in the runner-up finish behind the race-leading Red Bull drivers, their porpoising issues continue to drag them back, as has reported in the initial races of the 2022 racing calendar.

Verstappen started in third place, behind polesitter Charles Leclerc and second-placed Sergio Perez going into the Sunday event at the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan. Perez took the lead on the first turn, and while Verstappen drew in, Carlos Sainz was forced to retire due to a hydraulics issue, becoming Ferrari’s first Did-Not-Finish (DNF) case.

Pierre Gasly, Sebastian Vettel, and Fernando Alonso finished fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively, behind Hamilton’s fourth-place finish.
