August 27, (THEWILL) – Max Verstappen cemented his dominance in Formula One by claiming a record-equalling ninth consecutive race win at a dramatic Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Red Bull driver matched Sebastian Vettel’s streak of nine wins in a row from 2013 by triumphing at a soggy Zandvoort circuit for the third year running. The race was full of drama as rain wreaked havoc right from the start. Verstappen initially lost position during the first round of pit stops but forged his way back to the front with a bold strategy.
A heavy downpour later caused a red flag and suspension of the race on lap 65. When action resumed, Verstappen remained calm under pressure to cross the line first ahead of Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly. In doing so, he extended his huge championship lead over teammate Sergio Perez to 138 points with just 9 races left.
“I already had goosebumps when they were playing the national anthem before the start,” said an elated Verstappen. With 14 wins in a row for Red Bull across two seasons, they seem unstoppable in their quest for another double title.
Verstappen’s 46th career win brings him ever closer to a third world championship. But he faces a stiff test next weekend at the Italian GP, where Ferrari’s passionate home support will be eager to see their team bounce back.
