August 14, (THEWILL) – Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, aimed criticism at Chelsea’s massive transfer spending this summer, as the two clubs have engaged in bidding battles to sign young midfielders Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.
Chelsea look set to confirm the British record £115 million signing of Caicedo from Brighton after Liverpool had a £111 million bid accepted. The Reds have also been frustrated in their pursuit of Lavia, with Chelsea matching their £55 million bid for the Southampton teenager.
In total, Chelsea will have spent over £800 million on new players since Todd Boehly’s takeover, including close to £300 million just this summer under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.
When asked about the transfer rivalry after Liverpool and Chelsea’s 1-1 draw on Sunday, Klopp took a dig at the Blues’ lavish spending. “Where’s the camera? No [I cannot say anything]. Oh, that [new signings] is what the Chelsea manager wants, and usually they get it! I’ve got nothing to say about it to be honest,” he said in post-match comments.
Chelsea’s ability to outspend Liverpool has clearly irked Klopp as he sees two priority targets slip away. But the German will be hoping he can still convince one of the talented young midfielders to choose Anfield over Stamford Bridge.
