US Women Flog Mexico 4-0 To Keep Unbeaten Streak And Dominance

July 02, (THEWILL) – The established dominance of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) was again on display when striker Christen Press scored twice to ensure their unbeaten streak extended to 43 games in Thursday’s 4-0 win against Mexico in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Two goals from Samantha Mewis in the 21st minute, and Press in the 39th meant the US team went into the break with as many goals as they produced in the second half. A 74th minute Tobin Heath goal made it three before Press redirected a cross by Tierna Davidson in the 85th for her brace.

The string of wins illustrates the capacity of the Vlatko Andonovski-coached team to keep their World Cup winning reputation intact heading into the Olympics. Along the line of their victories, Press has taken her tally to 63 career international goals, including 15 goals along with 18 assists in her past 36 games alone.

The fixture against Mexico is the penultimate tie to complete the preparation schedule before the USWNT face Sweden in the opener of their Tokyo Olympics tournament July 21. They are due to face Mexico again at the same venue in three days as the final preparation game.

Defeating the Mexicans on Thursday made it the 19th consecutive victory for the team, coming after the Thursday, June 17, 2-0 Summer Series victory over the Super Falcons of Nigeria at the brand new Q2 Stadium Austin, Texas, where Press also found the net to open the scoring for the Americans.

Beating Mexico also brought their record to 52 wins and five draws in the past 57 home games for the USWNT. In the last 43 matches they played, the ladies have won 39 and drawn four to equal the second-longest running USWNT unbeaten streak from March 2012 to March 2014.

Their longest ever streak in the football history of the country ran from December 2004 to September 2007 where the team went 51 games without tasting a single defeat.
