US Soccer Parts Ways With Coach Berhalter After Early Copa America Exit

July 11, (THEWILL) – Gregg Berhalter will leave his role as head coach of the United States men’s football team following their early exit from the Copa América.

The decision comes after the US failed to progress from the group stage, suffering defeats to Panama and Uruguay.

US Soccer President, Cindy Parlow Cone, thanked Berhalter for his dedication and stated that the organisation would now focus on finding a new manager for the team. The change marks a significant shift for US football, as Berhalter was expected to guide the team towards the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will co-host.

Berhalter’s tenure, which began in 2018, saw him lead the US to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup. However, his relationship with the team was strained by a public dispute with young star Gio Reyna. Despite this, Berhalter was rehired in June 2023 with the players’ support.

During his time as head coach, Berhalter, the first former national team player to coach the US at a World Cup, achieved 44 victories in 74 matches. The search for his replacement will now begin as US Soccer looks to a new era of on-field success.

The timing of Berhalter’s departure is crucial, with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. US Soccer will be keen to appoint a successor who can build on the team’s recent progress and prepare them for the challenges ahead.
